Obituary for William E. "Bill" Smith

William E. “Bill” Smith, 86 of Hot Springs Village known to many as the “Southern
Gentleman” went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday June 6, 2018. He faced his battle with Alzheimer’s with dignity and courage. Bill was born on July 30, 1931 in Ripley, MS to Lawrence P. and Sallie L. Smith.

He attended Buena Vista High School, Ripley, MS, where he graduated first in his class and played basketball earning a scholarship to Northeast Mississippi Junior College. He graduated with honors from Mississippi State University. Bill served four years in the United States Air Force. After serving he was employed with the John Deere Company and married his love, Barbara. He moved many times with the company, finally ending up in Moline, IL where they made their home and raised their three boys. Bill retired from the John Deere Company as General Credit Manager.

After his retirement, he and Barbara moved to Germantown, TN for twelve years and Bill was co-owner of Tempro Service Memphis, TN. They moved to Hot Springs Village in 2001 to live on the lake and play golf. He was very proud of the hole-in-one he made on Magellan Golf Course. Bill loved the Lord and was an ordained Deacon at Balboa Baptist Church. He also taught Sunday School for many years.

Preceded in death by his parents; his brothers; Lamar, Jim, and Bob Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara of Hot Springs Village; sons, Jeffrey Smith (Mary) of Dallas, TX, Jay Smith (Cheryl) of Johnston, IA, and Dr. Gerald Smith (Ann) of Brookfield, WI; grandchildren, Drew, Amanda (Graham), Erin, Annie, Hannah, Emily, and Clay; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Mt. Carmel Community and Arkansas Hospice staff for their love and care. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Balboa Baptist Church Music Ministry or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
