Obituary for Robert R. Grinnell

Robert R. Grinnell was born April 23, 1927, and passed away at the age of 91 on September 20, 2018. He was the son of Harry and Mae (Hamman) Grinnell. Robert graduated from Monroe High School in 1945 and then served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1945 to 1947 in Belgium, Holland, and Berlin, Germany. He was a veteran of WWII. Robert’s lineage in America dates back to 1590 in England and Rhode Island. He has distant ties to the Mayflower through John Alden.

Robert retired from Wisconsin Power and Light Company (Alliant Energy) on October 1, 1987. He was a member of the Wisconsin Southwest Planning Commission, Mineral Point Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce Director, BPOE Platteville, F & AM Mineral Point Lodge #1, Sahara Shrine, and was a Past Director of the Royal Court of Jesters Court #126 of Madison.

Robert joined Kiwanis in Mineral Point on November 16, 1964, and held many positions in the club, division, and district. He was Lt. Governor of Division 5 in 1969. Robert was elected to Governor of the Wisconsin Upper Michigan District in 1979-1980. He served on the District Foundation Board for 6 years. Robert was instrumental in the design and building of a bath facility at Trees for Tomorrow, Eagle River, Wisconsin.

Robert was awarded the coveted Tablet of Honor and George Hixson awards and served as club Secretary of the Hot Springs Village Kiwanis Club for 8 years. He also was presented with Kiwanian of the Year in 2010-2011.

He and his wife Barbara moved to Hot Springs Village in 1995. Robert was especially proud of two holes-in-one in the Village. He enjoyed bowling since age 12, fishing for salmon in Canada and Lake Michigan, woodworking, and gardening.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; sister, Joyce Coplien in Monroe, Wisconsin; brothers-in-law, Mark Vandelist, Tom Vandelist, and many nephews and nieces.

Memorial service will be 11:00am on Tuesday, September 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hot Springs Village. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, DePere, Wisconsin.
