Obituary for Howard Malcolm Findley, Jr.

Howard Malcolm Findley, Jr. was born on March 5, 1927 in Seattle, Washington, to Della Grace Gehman Findley and the Honorable Howard Malcolm Findley, Sr. He passed away peacefully at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Hot Springs, Arkansas on January 15.

At three days of age Howard was admitted into Seattle’s League of Real Americans, “the littlest goodfellow ever admitted into a fraternal order”. He grew up in Seattle, and attended Broadway High School. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Howard experienced firsthand the removal of Japanese American classmates and their families who were sent to internment camps.

Howard met his future wife, Mariann Beatrice Lomax, when they were sixteen years old. He bought a tie from her at Frederick and Nelson Department Store, and received the promise of a date. When Mariann passed away 74 years later, Howard wore that very tie to her celebration of life.

Howard attended the University of Washington, earning a business degree. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He also served in the US Navy during World War II. Howard and Mariann were married June 12, 1949 in Medina, Washington with his father, the Honorable Howard M. Findley, sr. officiating.

In 1956 Howard was transferred to Chicago by the Masonite Corporation. He and Mariann raised their four children in Barrington, Illinois. Marketing and sales were Howard’s areas of expertise and he worked for Rockwell International, Chamberlain Manufacturing, US Industries and Brennan and Associates before creating his own consulting firm.

Upon his retirement, Howard’s love of tennis took the Findleys to Hot Springs Village where he played competitively until he was 80 years old. He and Mariann enjoyed traveling, bird-watching, picking wild berries and watching sports of all kinds, especially the Razorbacks.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Lloyd Gordon Findley and Mariann, his wife of 68 years.

He is survived by his four children: Ann Findley Spurgeon and husband, John, of Urbana, Illinois; Gail Findley Ransler and husband, Charles, of Paducah, Kentucky; MaryJane Findley, of Asheville, North Carolina; Howard Malcolm Findley, III, and wife Nancy, of Mason, Ohio;
Ten grandchildren: Patrick Spurgeon (Carolyn), Charles Ransler, IV (Madeleine), Findley Ransler Finseth (Ryan), Katherine Spurgeon Volk (Kevin), Abigail Ransler Sabri (Sammer), Anna Katherine Ransler Donati (Tyler), Megan Findley, Caroline Findley,

Six great-grandchildren: Beatrix and Clementine Finseth, Addison Spurgeon, Avery Volk, Charles Ransler, V; and Enzo Donati; his sister in law, Margery Lomax Mallory of Dallas, Texas and nieces and nephews in Washington, Oklahoma and Texas.
