Obituary for Jean A Kasney

Jean Ann Kasney (nee Mordus) passed away on June 28, 2018 after a brave and extended battle with cancer. Her family was grateful that she demonstrated the courage and commitment to travel to some joyous family events during her illness, including the weddings of two of her grandchildren in Virginia and Colorado, and a recent family reunion in Idaho, where she was delighted to hold her first great grandchild. Jean was born on May 15, 1936 in Whiting, Indiana where she grew up with her parents and her siblings. She attended St. John the Baptist Grade School and Whiting High School. She left Whiting at age 18 to join the U.S. Marine Corps, where she served as a telephone operator, and met her future husband, Ken, at Camp Pendleton, CA. They were serving on “Mess Duty,” a rite of passage for young enlisted Marines, when they met. After both were honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, they subsequently returned to Northwest Indiana and made their homes in Whiting and Dyer, Indiana until their retirement. In 1992, they built and moved to their “forever home” in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where Jean enjoyed the last 25 years of her life.

While in Northwest Indiana, Jean worked in production operations at RR Donnelley in Chicago, Illinois and later, had a long and successful career at White Castle. She began her career at White Castle as a Team Member in the early 1970’s, and, through hard work and dedication, earned her way to a District Supervisor position In Chicago some years later. Though Jean and Ken came from humble beginnings, they lovingly raised two children and instilled in them integrity, honor and a sense of social responsibility. Not only was Jean actively involved in her children’s school, sports and social activities, but she was equally involved in the lives of her three grandchildren. She went to great lengths to sustain meaningful connections in all of their lives, and rightfully garnered the respect and devotion of both her children and grandchildren. Her impact on their growth, development and success simply cannot be overstated. Jean was preceded in death by her father, Frank Mordus, Sr.; her mother Rose Mordus (nee Jancek); and her brothers, Frank and John Mordus. Jean is survived by her husband, Kenneth Franklin Kasney, from Medicine Lodge Kansas; her son, Kenneth (Lisa); her daughter, Kim; three grandchildren, Michelle (Andy), Kristen (Mike) and DJ (Abby); and her treasured great granddaughter, Sierra.

A memorial Mass to honor Jean will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.
