Obituary for Ross Wagner Johnson

Ross Wagner Johnson lost a valiant battle with cancer on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Devoted and cherished husband of Linda, whom he married on April 28, 2006; beloved father of Leslie Mather (Accord, NY); David Johnson (San Diego, CA and Phoenix, AZ); and stepfather to Chris Aldridge (Atlanta, GA). His adored first-born son, Wayne, predeceased him in January 2017.

Born in Englewood, NJ in 1935 to Wayne K. and Eileen R. Johnson, Ross was active from an early age, showing mechanical aptitude and an affinity for cars. Ross attended Cornell University’s College of Engineering, graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 1958. While at Cornell, he was president of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, accepted an Army ROTC commission, and manager of the men’s crew team. Upon graduation, he accepted an assignment in Okinawa, Japan, spending three happy years on the other side of the globe beginning his family.

Returning to NJ in 1962, Ross joined the family business, Johnson Ford. In 1966, Ross, his father, and brother moved the business to Kingston, NY. Ross became president in 1972 expanding the corporation to include a Nissan franchise and Campers Barn employing at its peak, more than 200 employees. Throughout his life, Ross was an enthusiastic and hardworking member of Rotary International for 60 continuous years, serving many positions including president of the Kingston Rotary Club in the 1970’s, president of the Ulster County Board of Mental Health, consistory member of Fair Street Reformed Church and host dad to Turid Jorgensen, our AFS student in 1976, who is still considered a part of our family today.

In 1992, Ross retired to Hot Springs Village, AR. He enjoyed fishing, boating, international and domestic travel – the latter in his motorhome, visiting every state in the continental U.S. including Alaska. He was a member of Christ of the Hills UMC. In 2005, he met Linda Wallace, they married and enjoyed twelve blissful years in their beautiful home on the lake.

Ross will be remembered for his cheerful enthusiasm, keen business acumen, commitment to giving back to his community, excellent work ethic and for the wonderful life he provided for his family. He will be sorely missed.

In addition to immediate family, Ross is survived by seven grandchildren; brother Paul Johnson; sister Lynn Houze; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2018 at Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church in Hot Springs Village.
