Obituary for Boyd Heath

Boyd Heath, age 78, of Hot Springs, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018. He was born July 23, 1939, near Walcott, Arkansas, to the late A.C. and Nellie Heath.

Predeceased by brothers Jack Heath and Willie Heath; sisters Ruby Bottoms, Eva Matlock, Sue Smith, and Linda Clark.

Boyd is survived by his wife, Janet, of 51 years; sons, Shannon Heath (Melissa) of Bonnerdale; Chad Heath (Missy) of Prescott; six grandchildren – Ren Heath, Lucas Heath, Jake Heath, Colt Heath, Darien Overton, and Julia Overton; three sisters, Amy Carter of Jonesboro; Betty Mason of El Dorado; and Janie Rogers of Malvern.

Boyd graduated from Greene County Tech High School in Paragould in 1957; Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Service in Dallas, Texas, in 1966; and National Park College with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

He was employed by Caruth Funeral Home from 1966 to 1969; the Hot Springs Police Department from 1969 to 1989, retiring as Sergeant; from 1991 to 2014, he was employed as Board Inspector and Investigator for the Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. Boyd honorably served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961. He was a member of Hot Springs Fraternal Order of Police #1; he was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Glenwood Masonic Lodge #662.

Boyd served as a member of a federal Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team – Region 6 (DMORT), which is charged with helping identify remains of people killed in disasters and is under authority of Homeland Security. His first tour as a member of the team was in Guam when a Korean Airlines crashed killing 229 passengers; the next was working the flood in Del Rio, Texas, killing an untold number of people; and then working the 911 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

A special appreciation to his daughter-in-law, Melissa Heath, for her care and comfort until his passing.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home, and service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dierksen Hospice; Alzheimer’s Association; or American Cancer Society.

Pallbearers will be Hot Springs Police Department Honor Guard.
