Obituary for Opal Whitfield Castleberry

Opal Whitfield Castleberry passed from this life on July 20, 2017. She was born to Reverend Wanie and Minnie Burroughs Whitfield on June 29th, 1935. She was married to Leo Castleberry Senior on April 12, 1952. She was Leo’s right hand and traveled endlessly to churches where she and the boys would perform with Leo. She played the piano and accordion like no other. No matter what adventure Leo led her on, she was right there supporting him.

They had five sons together, Leo Jr. , Ronnie, Bruce, Dennis and Richard. She had six grandsons, Trey, Josh, Christopher, Justin, Devin and Kyle. She had four great grandsons, Tanner, Gunner, Chad and Noah and two great granddaughters, Rhilynn and Claire.

Opal loved her family more than life itself. She was happiest with every one of them gathered around her table enjoying her delicious cooking, laughing and telling stories. She was always there for them when they needed her. Her passing leaves a huge void that will never be filled. She will be greatly missed.

Opal is survived by sons Leo Jr. (Sarah), Ronnie (Belinda) and Dennis, grandsons, Trey, Josh, Justin, Devin and Kyle, great grandchildren, Gunner, Chad, Rhilynn, Noah and Claire, her brother Bill (Dorthea) Whitfield of Benton and brother in law, Charles Powell. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce and Richard, one grandson, Christopher, one great grandson, Tanner, three sisters, Oneeda Beebe, Dean Whitfield and Faye Powell, two brothers, Farrell Whitfield and Clifford Whitfield of Benton, AR.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Trey Castleberry, Josh Castleberry, Justin Castleberry, Devin Castleberry, Kyle Castleberry and great grandson, Gunner Castleberry.

Honorary pallbearers include, Worley Reeves, Charles Powell, Mike Lyons, Harry Childs, Stan LaFever and Dr. Scott Anderson. The family wishes to thank Dr. Scott Anderson, Dierksen Hospice and their incredible team for the loving care they gave.

A celebration of Opal’s life will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home. Upon Opal’s request, there will be no public graveside service but she asked that those that can, stay after the service for visitation with the family.
