Obituary for Mary Stewart Sastra

Mary Elizabeth Sastra, age 98, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2018. A caring wife and mother, she was truly loved by family, friends, and colleagues.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack Stewart, second husband Joseph Sastra, brother, Larry Clark, and sister, Jessie Hoy.

She is survived by her son, John Stewart of Hot Springs: daughter-in-law Vanessa Stewart of Hot Springs; son, Patrick Stewart of Hot Springs; son, Tim Stewart of Ocala, Florida; son, Steven Stewart of Asheville, NC; step-children Shane Coleman, of Bellevue, TX; Gig Manwarren of Norwich, NY; Cindy Strain of Guilford, NY; Mike Sastra of Endicott, NY; and Kim Lotierzo of Winter Park, FL; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary was born in Delancey, New York on July 31, 1920. She grew up on a dairy farm in the Catskills and helped with farm chores from the age of four. She was extremely hard-working and lived a life of service to others. She served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, based in Washington, D.C. A resident of Hot Springs since 1959, she worked at Libby Memorial Physical Therapy Center and as a nurse's aide at Quachita Hospital for a total of 25 years. In both places she assisted with the care of thousands of patients, helping them heal from illness and injury. She was known for her gentle nature, her laughter, and her kindness.

The family would like to thank all the staff from the Arkansas Agency on Aging, Lake Hamilton Health and Rehab, and Arkansas Hospice for the extraordinary care they provided her during her final days and years.

Graveside services will be held at a later date.
