Obituary for John Burnett East, Jr.

John Burnett East, Jr., of Hot Springs, left this earth on November 9, 2017, after a short, but hard fought battle with cancer. John was born on August 17, 1942, in Gadsden, Alabama, to John and Blanche (Sutherland) East.

After graduating from Glencoe (Alabama) High School in 1960, John enlisted in the United States Navy and went to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. After boot camp and a tour of duty on the French Riviera, Mr. East attended Navy Cryptologic Technician school and served at numerous Naval Security Group sites, including the National Security Agency in Maryland, Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, and the Naval Communication Area Master Station on Guam. John’s final duty station was as the Command Master Chief at the Naval Security Group Activity at Homestead Air Force Base, FL, where he retired after 26 years of Naval Service in 1986.

John was an avid golfer for many years and after his Naval Service, served as the Assistant Manager of the Homestead AFB golf course until 1992 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed the base. John continued his love of golf until coming to Hot Springs in 1996 where he was introduced to Oaklawn Jockey Club by a friend and came to love horseracing and the people involved in the sport. For many years, John never missed a day of live meet.

Also during his time here in Hot Springs, John became involved in the Ronald McDonald House Pull Tab donation program. He spent many hours as the area coordinator for the program, collecting the pull tabs from the various city drop-off centers, and ensuring the money raised from the aluminum tabs was sent to the Ronald McDonald House in Little Rock. John thoroughly enjoyed being involved in this worthwhile program and counted it as one of his passions.

Mr. East is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diane; sons, Charles East of Alabama, John East III (Dolores) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; daughter, Elizabeth East of Alabama; grandchildren, Katie, Ryland and Michael East; great-granddaughter, Annabelle East; sisters, Judith Arnold (Kenneth), Jill East Balthaser (David Balthaser); and brother, Jack East (Louise).

A celebration of John’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel.

John’s family gives their thanks to the wonderful staff at the Arkansas Hospice at CHI St. Vincent Hospital. Though John was there for only a very short time, the staff provided peace and comfort to him and his family. Their work is greatly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John’s honor to Arkansas Hospice, 628 Malvern Avenue, Hot Springs, AR 71901.
