Obituary for Holly Cathlene Deathrage Black

Heaven has gained a new angel. Holly Cathlene Deathrage Black, born on September 21, 1925, to the late James and Zoria Moore Deathrage, passed away on March 22, 2017.

Holly spent her childhood with numerous cousins on the old family homestead which is now known as Camp Charlton. In her later teen years, she attended Hot Springs High School and worked several part-time jobs at the movie theater on Ouachita Avenue and then later at Kress Five and Dime Store.

Following her marriage to William M. Black, she worked for Singer Sewing Machine Company teaching sewing and then did alterations at Howard Caldwell’s Dry Goods Store. Holly’s greatest joys came through her participation in school activities for her two children. She was an avid Arkansas Razorbacks and St. Louis Cardinals fan. Holly was introduced to the sport of bowling and became quite involved by traveling to different state and national tournaments while serving both her local leagues and association as an officer.

Holly is the widow of William M. Black to whom she was married for over 58 years prior to his death. She was the mother to Ronald O. “Butch” Black for his 58 years of life.

Holly is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Billie and John Wetzler; daughter-in-law, Jane Black; grandsons and their wives, Brent and Nikki Wetzler of Alexander, Geoffrey and Faith Wetzler of Hot Springs; Andy and Carmen Black of Hot Springs; and granddaughter, Elizabeth and Brian Henry of Sarasota, Florida. The lights of her life were her great-grandchildren, Lorelei and Allen Wetzler and Sydney and Cooper Henry. Her bonus grandchildren include Joseph Logan and his son, Parker of Alexander, and Tanya and Justin West, and their children, Gage and Harper of Stuttgart. Holly also is survived by her long-time friend and sometime caregiver, Nancy Seaton, and numerous friends with whom she bowled over the years. She also is survived by her faithful companion and shadow of the last 16 years, her dog, Pretty Boy.

Pallbearers are Brent Wetzler, Geoffrey Wetzler, Steve Botter, Joseph Logan, Jerry Hawthorn and Andy Black.

Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

A celebration of Holly’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Claire Rhodes officiating.
