Obituary for Edith Marie Sunderland

Edith Marie Sunderland, 88, of Hot Springs, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 5, 2017. She was born January 8, 1929, in Pike County, Salem, Arkansas to Harvey Clark and Nettie Caroline Plyler of Salem.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; the love of her life, her husband of 57 years, Gene Sunderland; sister, Lola Machen; and brothers, Alf Plyler, Pete Plyler, Hurley Plyler, and John Plyler.

Edith was a 1947 graduate of Kirby High School and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in education at Henderson State University. She taught for a host of 2nd graders over the years at Lake Hamilton Elementary and retired in 1987 after 28 years of teaching.

Edith was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Hot Springs for many years. She loved working in the church and serving others. Every Wednesday night she could be found serving meals at the church. Edith loved her church and family.

She is survived by sons, Jerry Lynn Sunderland, Terry Mark Sunderland and his wife Sharon; grandchildren, Theron Sunderland, Jennifer Sugg (Brad), Miranda Sunderland, Angela Maddox (Roger), Terry Mark Sunderland II (Jennifer); great-grandchildren, Keaton Sugg, Alexis Sugg, Leeland Sugg, Skilar Maddox, Elijah Maddox, Maisyn Claire Sunderland, Brooklyn Davis, Baylee Davis; brother, Carl Plyler; and many nephews, nieces, and family friends.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

A celebration of Edith’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John McCallum officiating.

Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Warren Plyler, John Wayne Plyler, Hurley “Bo” Plyler Jr., Dr. Carl Plyler, Billy Plyler, and Johnny Plyler.
