Obituary for E.T. (Ed) Smitherman

E.T. (Ed) Smitherman passed away January 17, 2018. He was born October 7, 1923, to Bud and Nola Smitherman. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Francys; grandson, Eddie Lewis; and son-in-law, Wm. (Bill) Lewis.

Ed is survived by his children, Sue Lewis, Tom Smitherman (Shirley), Glenn Smitherman (Cherie), and Ray Smitherman (Barbara); five grandchildren, Scott Lewis, Lorrie Williams (Jason), Carey Clark (Jerry), Stacey Smitherman, and Kimberly Parkerson (Christopher); four great-grandchildren; and many friends.

For most of his life, Ed was involved in the automotive parts business. He was the retired owner of Auto Parts and Bearings, Inc., which included four stores, a paint specialty store and machine shop.

Ed was a Christian and faithful member of First Baptist Church. Over the years Ed served his community as a charter member of Fifty for the Future, a 30 year member of the Hot Springs Rotary Club as a board member and Paul Harris Fellow, member of the Hot Springs Civil Service Commission, a Garland County Justice of the Peace and as Executive Director of the Arkansas Automotive Wholesalers Association.

In business, as a father, and in the community, Ed set the example for kindness, honesty, and integrity.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with a celebration of Ed’s life immediately following at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor John McCallum officiating.

Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Gene Watson, Bunnie Stewart, Alex Smith, Wesley McKnight, Steve Smith, and Tom Ellsworth.

Honorary pallbearers are John Robbins, Wm. (Bill) Watkins, Mike Parker, Gary and Jackie Ashcraft, Doyle Smith, John Batton, Sherri Neal, Jordan Sunday School Class, former employees and customers of Auto Parts and Bearings, friends at West Shores, and the staff of 2-East – CHI St. Vincent Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund.
