Obituary for David E. Bates

David E. Bates, 81, passed away Saturday May 6, 2017, at Willard Walker Hospice Home in Fayetteville, Arkansas. David was born March 25, 1936 to John Ward and Pansye Bates in Silver, a small community west of Hot Springs, Arkansas. A short time later his family moved to Hot Springs.

David is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Bates; sisters, Elaine Keeton, Rita Ramsey; and nieces, Debbie Clark and Kara LeFlore.

Growing up, David developed a passion for reading and a love of history. It was not surprising that he attended college to become a history teacher.

David very proudly served his country two separate stints in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Sgt.E-5. He then began work as a craftsman with Reynolds Metals Company in Jones Mill, Arkansas. After his retirement, he and his wife, Ruth, owned and operated the Bald Mountain Softball Complex in Hot Springs. Eight years later they sold the ball park and moved to Texarkana, Texas, after the arrival of their first grandchild. While living in Texarkana, David fulfilled his dream of writing a novel and Reflections of Fran Stone became a reality.

Regardless of where David and Ruth lived, church has always been the center of their lives. Their home churches include Second Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church in Hot Springs, First Baptist Moores Lane in Texarkana, Texas, and currently First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Oliver Bates; daughter, Robin and her husband Randy Hilton of Texarkana, Texas; grandchildren, Drake Welch of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Kayce Welch of Texarkana, Texas; sister, Judy and her husband Al Parker of Alexander, Arkansas; several nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Visitation will be 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

A celebration of David’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home in Hot Springs with Rev. Coy Sample officiating.

Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Moores Lane in Texarkana, Texas with Rev. Larry Sims officiating.

Pallbearers include Larry Spivey, Jeff Addison, Rusty Parker, Steve Carpenter, Darin Beckwith, James Gilliam, and Kile Russell.

Honorary pallbearers are Don Kimball, Owen Dillard, Frank Scott, L.J. Hines, Carlton Fountain Fishermen’s Sunday School Class – FBC Moores Lane, Texarkana, Texas, Dave Williams’ Sunday School Class – FBC Fayetteville, and the Magnet Cove High School Class of 1954.
