Obituary for Carl Schurz Atwater

Carl Schurz Atwater, 87, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, died March 3, 2017, at a local hospital. He was born November 20, 1929, in Evanston, Illinois, to Karl W. and Hilda H. Atwater.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bruce; his first wife, Anne; and his second wife, Dixie.

Survivors include his loving wife, Winnie; sons, Douglas and Paul Atwater of Birmingham, Alabama; step-son, Jim Holt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; brother, Craig and wife Elizabeth of Monroe, New Jersey; sisters-in-law, Lois Hargrove, Nikki Grisham (Orville), Jerri Sesser all of Hot Springs; special nephew and caregiver, Lance Walters; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

After graduation from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science Degree, Carl was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and ordered to active duty. After serving as a platoon leader in the 2nd Armored Amphibian Battalion, he was released from active duty and joined the organized reserves.

Carl and his wife, Anne, moved to Akron, Ohio, where he joined the Employee Relations Division of the B.F. Goodrich Company in 1954. In 1968 he was transferred to Aircraft Wheel and Brakes Operations in Troy, Ohio, and promoted to personnel manager.

In 1977 Carl retired from the Marine Corps at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1984 he retired from B.F. Goodrich and with his wife, Dixie, relocated to Hot Springs. Carl was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 380, Cornell Alumni Association, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, and the Marine Corps Association.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home. A celebration of Carl’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held March 14 at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock.

Honorary pallbearers are David Ross, Mike Muldoon, Ed King, Ron Nicely, Dave Matusky, Lindrel Hogaboon, Lance Walters, Ron Schipinski, Frank Runyan, John Spehek, Dick Gillam, Terry Reed, Tim Moyer, Terry Rutledge, and Bill Stahl.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
