She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on December 31, 1938 to Ruby and Paul McFarland. Throughout her life, she lived in San Manuel, Arizona; Marianna, Arkansas; and Hot Springs. A member of Cedar Glades Baptist Church, she doted on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She had one older brother, Porter, born in 1932, and a half-brother, Thomas, born in 1953. Her survivors include four children—Joni Gilmore, Paula Haddock, Donna Nicholas, and Joe Nicholas. She had eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Numerous cousins and their children extended her family.

She earned her Registered Nursing degree from Philips County Community College and spent the majority of her life caring for others.
